Storms and hurricanes
Mazatlán is located on the Pacific coast of Mexico, making it vulnerable to tropical storms and hurricanes. Hurricane season typically runs from June to November, when ocean waters are warmest and conducive to the formation of powerful storms.
Known hurricanes and storms
Hurricane Nora (1970): One of the most destructive hurricanes, Nora hit Mazatlan on September 19, 1970. The hurricane reached Category 4, causing significant flooding and destruction in the city and surrounding area. Homes, infrastructure, and farmland were damaged.
Hurricane Lidia (1981): In October 1981, Hurricane Lidia made landfall in Mazatlan with strong winds and heavy rains. Although its power was lower than Nora’s, Lydia caused severe floods and landslides that affected many areas of the city.
Hurricane Kenna (2002): Kenna, which reached Category 5, passed near Mazatlan in October 2002. Although neighboring areas bore the brunt, Mazatlán was still hit by strong winds and waves, causing damage to coastal structures and flooding of low-lying areas.
Hurricane Vila (2018): In October 2018, Hurricane Vila reached Category 5 but weakened to Category 3 before making landfall near Mazatlan. Despite this, the hurricane caused significant damage, heavy rain, and flooding, flooding streets and houses.
Storms and floods

Tornado
